Who is this for?
The Novice Knitter: level 1 course is for anyone who would like to learn the very foundations of knitting.
You may be a complete beginner, maybe you always wanted to knit and wondered what it was that made your mum, your gran and best friend always have projects on the go. Perhaps you’ve seen people knitting on the train as you commute and realise that Audible can only keep you occupied with the next ‘highly recommended’ crime drama for so long!
You may have knitted in the past; maybe you learned as a child, or picked up a few skills a 3, 5 or 10 years ago, but need a reminder of the first essentials.
This course will help you pick up your yarn and knitting needles with confidence. By the time you’ve finished you’ll know your DK from your Worsted, your stitch from your row and your knit from your purl.
Why do you need it?
Knitting is a very satisfying thing. With every ball of yarn you can make something- yourself. Be that a hat for your neighbour’s baby, a pair of mittens for your niece to wear to school or, as this course teaches, a homemade case for your smartphone.
You’ll notice that the cost of the yarn, especially for the smaller items, is substantially less than you would pay for the finished hat, scarf or mitts that you might find in the shop. And your friends and family will love that you put time and effort into making them something as a gift, (and some might not even realise that you made it as your skills are honed and practised!)
Probably the most important thing is that this course will give you a gift you didn’t know you needed. Creativity. Choosing your own yarn, becoming more independent as a producer of handmade items gives the creator something more in life thats totally unexpected (unexpected if it wasn’t for the fact that I’m actually telling you here of course!).
I hope you’ll join me as I explain a little further:
Brene Brown, the noted social scientist and thought leader says,
“The only unique contribution that we will ever make in this world will be born of our creativity.”
And you may not realise it, but by taking up a craft such as knitting, by expanding the crafts and arts that are already in your life you will see creativity blossom in so many other facets of your life too. You’ll see and imagine possibilities from walking a different way home, to doodling on your notepad at lunchtime.
And over time this expands to a physicist seeing atoms in a whole new way and winning a prodigious five year grant, to a school dinner lady suggesting a different way of laying out the food which sees the line of children moving through the checkout a twice the original speed.
‘but hang on Hannah! I’m not being at all creative, I’m just following your ideas, your videos, your patterns!’
That may be true, but every stitch on your needle is a creation, and your mind is growing with every row you complete, with every item you make.
You’re imagining who will have the hat or scarf you’re making, which colours they’d like…. and before you know it you’ll be experimenting with different colours and yarns for different recipients.
By entering into the world of making knitwear from a pair of needles and a ball of yarn, you are a creative, an artist.
Why buy from me?
I teach knitting and understand that knitting skills need to be taught and practiced within niches so they can become easier and more automatic.
I have been knitting for almost forty years and have been designing since 2008. I began teaching knitting when my friends at school needed help, and this has continued with friends and family ever since. I’m the once who people ask for help with their knitting crises, and I have a knack of knowing how to help them move further with their skills into independent and confident knitters.
You can guarantee that when I give each course a title and focus on a skillset and knowledge level you will not be asked to reach any further than the Meets Expectations grade in your OWLS knitting exams at Hogwarts!
This course is for absolute beginner knitters or those who have not picked up their knitting for a few years and need a reminder of the foundation skills.
Secret knitting jargon is included, but only when absolutely necessary! And I give full video support for each item, including fixing any mishaps which might occur.
The first two items are knitted without the need to read a knitting pattern, (the term used to describe written instructions for making an item- like a recipe for knitting instead of cooking!) I will then guide you through following the pattern for the baby beanie while continuing the full step-by-step video support.
