Where did all those extra stitches come from?

When you start knitting as a beginner knitter, there's a strong likelihood that after a few rows there will be more stitches on the needles than you started with. It's a rite of passage as a knitter. Don't feel that you're doing anything wrong or that you have to give up because you can't knit.
